Strengthening Peer Support Through Shared Ethics and Values

About the Project

Peer Support Canada, PeerWorks and Dr. Lee de Bie of St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, and McMaster University have received two grants from the Canadian Institute for Health Research and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council to explore the possibility of co-creating a revised Code of Ethics for the practice of peer support in Canada. This initiative will explore ethical challenges in peer support and develop practical guidance to strengthen ethical, community-based peer support across Canada.

About the Workshop

On July 22nd we’ll be holding a Code of Ethics Workshop. During this workshop, we’ll hear from researchers who have done work exploring Codes of Ethics. They’ll talk to us about how codes get written, who they’re written by, the ways in which they’re used, and will offer some helpful considerations for the peer support community as we embark on this work together.

We’ll also share back some of the key messages that we heard from peer supporters during an initial consultation at the PeerWorks/Peer Support Canada conference.

The workshop will also include substantial time for participants to get together to discuss how these lessons apply to the practice of peer support, how they don’t and what a revised ethical tool could look like for the practice of peer support.

The workshop will be taking place on Zoom, on July 22nd from 12:00 – 4:00 EST. More details to come!!

We’d encourage you to attend for as much or as little as you’re able to attend.
